In the article “How Does Hollywood
Handle Ageism” a conversations between long time films producers,
Dorothea and Daniel Petrie, express how they feel about age in the
movie making business. In today's culture a younger generation of
movie makers are increasing. These younger individuals tend to feel
that old people are not physically able and aren't up to date. This
makes younger producers more ideal, but as Dorothea responds, that
“often, however, they're uncomfortable about exercising authority
over someone older.” (D. Petrie, par 3) Both Dorothea and Daniel
believe it is important to have a vast of different ages working
together and old age should not be a limitation or an issue. They
continue to say that aging doesn't stop, but the maturity from the
older generation can be effective toward the growth of others. Lately
there has been a desire from the public to see more old people in
movies, especially when Daniel directed Cocoon 2. The Petries believe
that the older population in movie production has “become a trend”
and “hope that trend will continue”as time progresses.
