In the article, “Media: A Girl’s Friend and Foe” by Susan
Douglas, American women’s complicated relationship with media and the images it
produces is discussed. Women are consistently bombarded with images of what they
“should” be: beautiful, thin, young, and flawless. Despite the fact that this
can lead to serious self-image issues and many women rally behind the idea of
shunning these stereotypes, they remain conflicted in their love/hate feelings
for the publications that promote these ideas. As a product of socialization by
mass media, many women still like to read magazines such as Vogue and take quizzes that explain who they are as a woman or
girlfriend. It is a difficult line to walk: accepting that these images are
constructed and do not necessarily replicate real life and, at the same time,
enjoying the guilty pleasures that are prevalent in our society and upbringings.
